twin fantasy (ftf) - car seat headrest

this is one of the most deeply personal albums i have ever listened to. it also balances great storytelling without 'descending into cliche' (see what i did there) about his relationship with his lover, which is not an easy task since love as a topic can get very stale and cliche very easily. strangely enough, i connect with this album without having any desire or interest in relationships in the first place. but anyways, will toledo decided to write this album about a lover he had in his adolesence. maybe the most interesting fact about this album is that is a rerecord of an album from 2011, also titled twin fantasy. he wrote this album originally in the aftermath of an extremely toxic relationship that affected him deeply. the song opens up with 'my boy' which sets the stage for the relationship by describing that they are long distance and don't see each other often, but together they will NOT be alone anymore. this song follows up with one of the best songs in the album, 'beach life-in-death', and honestly i do not fully understand this song in all its glory since i cannot connect with some of the feelings i have and i am not very gifted at interpretation. however, this has some of the most impactful lyrics i have ever heard and describes a multitude of different topics such as homosexuality, feeling lost, a desire for love, and probably more that i havent discovered through my enormous amount of listenings yet. the next song is the shortest song on the album, 'stop smoking (we love you)', where will expresses his desire to control his lover and his relationship to create the ideal TWIN FANTASY for himself and his lover. the next song is sober to death which reveals his lovers' anger issues and how they are both trainwrecks of people who happened to come together into a massive trainwreck. it showsa reoccuring theme of the album, with codependency, and how they both use their relationship as a coping mechanism instead of a healthy relationship because of both of their problems. the next song is nervous young inhumans, and truthfully i dont understand this song at all, however, i like the end bit a lot where it describes the painstar in detail and also describes depression that will is experiencing. the next song is bodys which is one of the most poppy and upbeat songs on the album and describes will's desire to be one with his lover. he describes that they're young and could die at any minute so they should live every minute to the fullest together. the next song is cute thing where will continues to describe emotions that were described in bodys about how he wants to be together with his lover and wants to expeirence everything with his lover. the next song 'high to death' shows will in a desperate state where he starts to contridict himself in sentiments described in stop smoking just because he wants to maintain his relationship, no matter how fucked up or mangled it is. this is one of the most heartbreaking tracks on the entire album because it shows will at an extremely vulnerable and heartbrokens tate because him and his lover are falling out of love and he is going to lose his twin fantasy in his mind. the next song is the longest and also my favorite on the entire album, 'famous prophets (stars)'. this track is a track in which will begins realizing that the relationship is over and he begins giving up. he starts off saying 'but i cant help feeling like we're through' and 'twin bruises on my shins, from where i kicked the back of the seat in' which describes his frustration and his endurement of pain to sustain a relationship but then follows up with 'they meant what i went through for you, but now they're fading, now they're gone' which shows that everything about his lover is fading and he has completely given up on this person. way towards the end of the song, he describes a reoccuring symbol of the painstar which is a star that is only seen every thousand or two thousand years and when soeone touches it they feel the worst pain in the entire world but only for a split second. will says 'did they tell you what happens when you tocuh it' and then says he will tell you what happens when you touch it and begins fading into a large crescendo which signals that he himself just touched the painstar. at the end of this song, he repeats a verse from the bible (1 corinthians 13) about love and how it never fails, reflecting the themes of the album, when he says now these two remain. he has given up on this fantasy but he doesn't care anymore, and has grown as a person which was not seen on the 2011 version of this album. this is most closely examined with the final song, 'twin fantasy (those boys)' where in this one will describes that this was just a fantasy and now it is over, but in the 2011 version, he says that this is the part of the song where will gives up, showing that he is still bitter in 2011 about this relationship and still desires what he had. overall, this album is one of the most important things i have ever listened to and has some of the greatest storytelling and lyricism. i employ everyone to listen to this and expeirnece this for themselves, however, because no words i could ever put down on paper could do this album any sort of justice. thanks for reading.

stratosphere - duster

THIS ALBUM IS SUPER AWESOME I DONT HAVE AS BIG OF A PERSONAL CONNECTION but it sounds so cool and makes me feel like richie tenenbaum in that one scene in the bathroom. i really like all the songs and the feel and aesthetic of the album is really super duper awesome because space is super cool and i love space rock. the guitars on this album instill a sense of completely giving up in some songs and it really does create an awesome stratosphere (atmosphere lol lol lol) of the album which i find pretty fantastical. i really like the opening song because it tells you what you are in for and this album has no bad songs. im not gonna write as much about this album as i did for twin fantasy as this album isn't as lyric heavy and has an overall feel that i really enjoy. my favorite song is probably 'constellations' as it has one of the best sounding guitars and it pairs perfectly with the lyrical content. duster is a really great band and if you havent listened to any of their stuff it is all super good but also super depressing and makes me sad but sometimes that is a good thing because it fits the mood i am feeling.

long awaited third review

monomania - car seat headrest

the successor to 2011's smash hit, twin fantasy. this one, however, receives more mixed reviews from fans and listeners as twin fantasy is seen as the relationship actively and monomania is seen as the explosive breakup. in this album, will is much more aggressive towards his fabled lover and shows his anger in full effect. this album begins with the line "i didn't like you anyway" this shows that will is in the anger phase of grief in his relationship and is trying to cope with the fact that it's gone by dissing the other person and portraying in his mind that they were awful to try to numb the pain. this album shows some very personal emotions, however, it somehow still connects with me. even though this album is about love and the after effects of love, it is applicable in any relationship whether it be platonic or romantic which lets me connect to this album very deeply and i have spent many nights listening to songs from this album and just crying about lost hope and regret. i like the lofi production as it compliments the deeply personal lyricism and feels of the album. on the second track of the album, he puts his complete anger with his lover on full display saying that everything they do is water under the bridge of their words and saying that they hate every part of them that they dont love. this album is offputting for some as it is deeply aggressive and at times flat-out rude and negative, but, i believe that it is just will trying to cope with the twin fantasy he attached himself to in the previous album. on the third track, it has an upbeat drum loop and talks about death and how he thinks his relationship was like a deal with a devil that he made with this person. on the fourth track, will goes back to his bashing of his significant other by saying that they're always wrong and they left will alone and hopeless by ending the relationship, showing wills deep frustration with the fact that his relationship has officially ended. this song reuses lyrics from twin fantasy in a more negative light because now we know that the lover has officially left and will is angry about this and wants to extinguish his flames of anguish through lyrics. on the fifth track, will talks about how he is going back to old friends and enjoying time with them instead of being sad, he also talks about the "good old boys" and that they can "still find joy in life to talk about". i believe will is referencing him and his lover before they had a relationship and the falling out because presumably they were close friends before the relationship and enjoyed each other's company immensely. on the sixth track, which also happens to be my favorite track, will goes through a mental breakdown where he talks about how he was having a good night with his significant other and wanted them to fuck him and to become one with his lovers soul. later in the song, he describes how the relationship will not let him go back to his single-sized bed, which represents that he is in a relationship now with this person and will no longer be alone, however, the other person, according to these lyrics, has some apprehension about the relationship. the 7th track talks about the person being gone and leaving the relationship, which continues will's grieving and acceptance of the relationship being over. the 8th track shows that will wants the person back because he doesnt like sleeping with strangers he knows nothing about. he describes how he wont know what music to play or what to talk about because he does not have a connection with his new partners like he did with his old one which shows that will still hasn't completely gotten over this person. the last song is also one of my favorites on the album where will says to the person that he has forgiven them and hopes they find someone better that loves them, while will is still sad about the relationship and the fact that the person hardly cares. this keeps going until the end when will begins a breakdown and startsd swearing and screaming out of regret and anger that his relationship is over and begins the cycle of anger towards the person again. however, will's sentiments are still there and he still wishes the best for the person who has wronged him. this album has some of the most intense and regretful lyrics i have ever heard and has some of the greatest lyricism in the entire catalog of csh.

fourth review

in the aeroplane over the sea - neutral milk hotel

this album takes you on a magical journey about death. the surreal lyricism that hardly makes any sense somehow pairs perfectly with the instrumentation to create a dream-like experience throughout. jeff mangnum is a masterful writer whos use of insanely vivid imagery and metaphors creates a life-changing experience throughout this album. this album begins with the opening track 'king of carrot flowers pt. 1' which is a beautiful song about (incestuous?) love in a dysfunctional relationship. jeff paints a picture of the two individuals falling into a deep love and connection with one another through some of the most beautiful imagery i have ever witnessed. the next song ‘king of carrot flowers pts. 2 & 3’ is about a rebirth in a sense. in the part 2 of king of carrot flowers, he exclaims his love for jesus christ, a figure who was reborn, and in part 3 he describes “going back into his mother’s womb” until he finds himself again, and when he does he will be reborn. the song ends with a screaming, showing he is reborn and has found his own identity and found himself. in the next song, the title track, jeff uses exceedingly absurdist and vivid imagery to describe a scene where he is floating on a cloud with his lover. this brings me to one of the key things to know about this album, jeff’s connection to anne frank and her book, ‘the diary of a young girl’. jeff is believed to be in love with anne frank and through this song we can see that on his cloud, he is with all of his friends and anne frank herself, despite her dying much before he was born. jeff’s vivid dream transcends time and shows that human love is unwavering and can reach people who have passed and bring them to life. in a sense this shows how jeff believes death is not the end, and despite death, we should continue on and continue to love. the next song, two-headed boy, catapults the album into the thematic importance of the next 5 songs, diving deep into death and how it relates to life. holland, 1945, is the song most closely examined as a song about anne frank, considering the title and the lyrical content, it shows jeff’s anger towards the world for letting people suffer and die and everyone’s negligence to the fact that the world is indiscriminate about death and does nothing to stop suffering by initiating practices that cause people to suffer (e.g. the holocaust or war in general). this is followed up by the song ‘communist daughter’ where jeff reflects on the past and about how the world has corrupted the sweet communist daughter and the existence of suffering and death has made it so this communist daughter cannot be innocent and live freely, it also reflects jeff’s lust for anne frank but that's kinda gross so i choose to ignore that. the next song, oh comely, is about a father cheating on his family with a prostitute, but represents the self-destructive nature of humans and their self-hatred of leaving their partner that they love. this song also relates to anne frank because it talks about how her body was buried and the fact that jeff, still not alive, could not save her and chose to leave her & her story in the diary shows that he is not truly the one for her that he thinks he is. the next song, ghost, talks about a ghost that is living in jeff’s house (presumably anne frank herself) and relates the theme of death to life. it describes how she wont ever die (though she is a ghost and already is dead) because people will succeed her life and choose to remember her, showing that she will never truly be gone and just disappear, and that her spirit/ghost is carried on throughout time and history (in anne frank’s case through her diary and her story). the last song, also my favorite, wraps up the theme of death with an ode to living and life. jeff’s love has transcended anne frank and has allowed her to live on as well as pass on. he also describes how god is a place that you will wait for your whole life, showing that you should live to experience the divine miracle that jeff has witnessed and providing a reason and an explanation to live. anyways, overall, this album is some of the best instrumentation and songwriting ever examined in the history of music, it also transcends the medium, and overtakes most pieces of media in general for the writing aspect. this is so fucking stupid tho cuz its a 4chan album about anne frank but somehow builds on the ideas of absurdism and is 10x better than anything camus french ass could write which is again, fucking stupid considering what the album is about.

fifth review

a promise - xiu xiu

tw for depressing topics

this album is heavily mentally taxing. this album was conceived at one of the darkest places in lead of xiu xiu jamie stewart’s life. his dad had killed himself only months prior and jamie was diving into unsafe sex practices and felt completely disgusted with himself at all times. at this time in his life, he wanted to kill himself everyday. this album is exceedingly experimental with the contrast of guitar acoustic usage and extremely distorted synths pairing with jamie’s extremely abrasive vocal performance that brinks on being complete mania at times. this album covers a variety of heartbreakingly depressing themes such as abuse, suicide, insecurity, regret, and jamie stewart’s own dealings with being a bisexual. i relate to this part especially since i haven’t come out to anyone that i’m pansexual yet so whoever's reading this will be the first and hopefully the last person to know since i dont intend on telling anyone directly besides my therapist. this album is like looking into someone’s mind while they are having a complete mental breakdown teetering on crisis and captures that feeling so sharply and painfully that this album cannot be called anything short of beautiful. the story behind the title adds to this as it is a direct reference to jamie stewart’s mom asking him to promise that he won’t kill himself like his father did and leave her all alone. the first song details an abusive relationship that in painstakingly direct fashion, even incorporating the sounds of someone being hit after the chorus to directly tell the audience that it is an abusive relationship. jamie writes this from personal experience as this relationship took place in the apartment above his when he was working on his group prior to xiu xiu, and details that the abuser is engaging in infidelity and that they have a family outside of the person they are abusing. the next song is also my favorite and is called ‘apistat commander’ and is a song directly about suicide. it isn’t pro suicide and more like the acknowledging of suicide as an escape that just puts your burden on other people that love and care about you. this song also shows xiu xiu’s ability to go from 0 to 100 with their use of distortion and jamie stewart’s vocal range as it starts off very slow and gradually builds into screaming about how, presumably talking about his dad, has directed his burden onto jamie and is causing him immense emotional turmoil because of it and ends with a major crescendo that sends me into a depressive mess everytime i listen to it. the next song, ‘walnut horse’, details jamie’s escape into extremely unsafe sexual practices after the time of his father’s suicide. it describes in graphic detail about jamie stewart’s sexual exeprience and ends with him crying out to his mom telling her not to worry as she was watching both her son fall into the deepest darkest pits of his existence at the time and her own mother dying of dementia aswell and is extremely heartbreaking to listen to knowing the story behind it. the next song, ‘20,000 deaths for eidelyn gonzales, 20,000 deaths for jamie peterson’ is a song describing jamie stewart’s father using metaphors that only he would understand about his father and practically having a mental breakdown with the acceptance that his father is gone, this song is extremely hard to decipher as it is extremely personal and comes off as nonsensical without understanding what he is saying. the next song, ‘pink city’, is very brash and loud with its distortions and talks about a writer, who wrote a book about the atrocities that went on in the balkan war, falling into deep heroin abuse. this song reflects jamie stewart’s mindspace a the time of complete and utter melancholy where he doesn’t have any faith in the world around him at all and is teetering on suicide daily. the next song, ‘sad redux-o-grapher’, is extremely sad and talks about jamie’s experience with a man who he cared about that just thought jamie was a complete idiot and didn’t really care for him at all. his self worth at the time was based on other’s perception which caused him to hate himself a lot. he talks about this lover being upset with jamie working towards a fancy dinner with his lover and instead his lover just worrying about the price and wanting something like a picture instead, but jamie is disgusted by his own appearance so he doesn’t understand why his lover would want that from him. this song shows that jamie was on a downward spiral that started from him already being at rock bottom and he was reaching the new depths of his mind at the time. the next song, ‘blacks’, is also one of my favorites because it details the haunting recollection of jamie stewart knowing his dad was suicidal but being unable to do anything about it. he writes from his dad’s perspective talking to jamie about telling him how he’s had enough and how he has given up and straight up wants to kill himself. jamie is recollecting memories that are inflicting immense pain on him constantly by using distortion and loud manic singing to really evoke the feeling that he is currently having an immense mental breakdown over this fact. the next song, ‘brooklyn dodgers’, details jamie stewart’s mental state again showing his regret for events in his past where he was unable to prevent anything and ended up knowing he hurt the person further by not being able to help. his lack of any closure for this person caused them to have an irreplaceable rift between them and is something that still eats at jamie constantly today in his awful mental state. the next song, ‘fast car’, is a cover of tracy chapman’s smash hit from the 80s. this cover takes an even more melancholic approach by using a very stripped down acoustic guitar paired with jamie’s softspoken, naturally melancholic voice. he changes some lines to fit his depiction of his life in relation to the song as well as putting a feeling of complete defeat instead of hopeful sadness that is examined in the original song. he does this to reflect how his life was eternally changed for the worse in the coming times before his dads suicide and the coming time after his dads suicide. the final song, ‘ian curtis wishlist’, displays jamie stewart’s emotional instability at the time, detailing his constant mood swings and tendency to get attatched to anyone who gave him any pay of mind. this song perfectly encapsulates jamie stewart’s mental state at the time of recording this album and helps conjure some hauntingly beautiful imagery about jamie stewart’s life at the time of recording this album. overall, this album is disgraceful, disgusting, heartbreaking, depressing, and above all else, a masterpiece. jamie stewart details his mental state so perfectly in this album through his vocal perfromance and his minimalistic use of industrial distortions and synths that reates one of the greatest albums ever made. i implore everyone to give this album a shot, even with the fact that it can be harsh at times and hard to listen to, it adds to the subject matter and conveys perfectly what the album is attempting to show. i think this might be the best thing i’ve ever written thus far.

ok computer - radiohead

this album is one of the most technically impressive albums in the history of music. it’s deserving of its immense critical and commercial success and was the album that cemented radiohead as one of the greatest bands to ever do it. this album was released during a time in which the lead singer of radiohead, thom yorke, was experiencing immense amounts of anxiety as the world was beginning to digitalize and the access to information was getting much greater than ever was before which led the band to be one of the first rock bands to incorporate electronic sounds into their instruments to create one of the most polarizing and forward thinking rock albums of all time. the first song, ‘airbag’, details a story of thom yorke where he survived a car crash. the irony of this song is that this album is based on anxiety about technology, but it was a seatbelt (a piece of technology) that saved his life. this song represents thom’s conflicting ideas about the rapid innovations in technology and machinery. the next song, ‘paranoid android’, is one of the most sonically impressive songs i have ever heard. it uses various instruments in tangent and has different sections with some of the greatest anti-capitalist lyricism i’ve heard. the next song, ‘subterranean homesick alien’, discusses thom’s feeling of isolation from the rest of society, using the idea of actual aliens to represent his alienation to everyone around him. this song has an extremely impressive vocal performance by thom and the instrumentation, as always, is phenomenal. the next song, ‘exit music (for a film)’, has one of the greatest crescendos and endings in the history of music. this song is so fucking impressive it literally is mind-boggling and the fact that this isn’t even top 3 on the album is fucking insane. the next song, ‘let down’, is about the melancholy and the complete hopelessness of the world we live in. it talks about how everyone drones away in their pointless fucking lives to no avail. the next song, ‘karma police’, is a song about conformity and how our society is fucked and forces us to conform to unfair rules and unfair ideals that people don’t agree with. it talks about how the karma police will seek vengeance against you if you don’t conform, representing our society and how people are forced to conform to the boundaries that society places on us. fuck fitter happier idc. next song is, ‘electioneering’, and i don’t like it that much lol the guitar is annoying as fuck and is the reason why this album isn’t a complete masterpiece. the next song, ‘climbing up the walls’, is great. the distortion gives an eerie vibe and the song is just complete insanity from the lyrics and the vocal delivery and it creates such an eerie feel overall. the next song is my favorite song on the album, titled ‘no surprises’, it is one of the most melancholy songs on the album. it has an easily recognizable guitar riff that sounds like an alarm going off. this song discusses the disgustingly boring life of 9 to 5 workers and how they are completely invisible in society. it discusses how people are just working til death and the song leaves an unexplainable emptiness in me everytime i listen to it. the next song, ‘lucky’, is cool idk it’s just good but like i dont want to analyze that song that much cuz i dont really get it lol. the last song, ‘the tourist’, is awesome. it talks about a man going by life too fast and society forcing him to slow down because they do not like what he is doing. blah blah blah society bad blah. anyways this album is super influential and good and i got kinda bored since i dont really care that much about this album as oppose to the other ones ive wrote about it so i am ending it here bye.

blue - joni mitchell

joni mitchell’s opus, blue, is one of the most important albums in history. it opened the door to so many female singer-songwriters and without this album we wouldnt have the likes of carole king and patti smith. this album is the quintessential “break-up” album and has some of the most poetic and deeply introspective lyrics i have ever heard. this album begins with opener, “all i want”, which introduces the listener to the folk acoustics that are seen throughout this album and introduces the listener to joni’s serenading voice and fantastic lyricism. it also introduces you to the sadness that is present throughout this album and sees joni reflecting on herself and her ex-lover in a negative light. what sets joni apart from other singer-songwriters is her ability to look inward instead of discussing outward and she displays her self-reflection magically on this song. the next song, “my old man”, is a song about love and love that was lost. it shows how joni desires to be domestic and settle down with someone she truly cares about, but when this person leaves she is utterly crushed and completely “blue” over it. it shows joni’s clash with love and freedom that is constantly a theme throughout this album expertly. the next song, “little green” is probably my favorite on the album. it is about joni’s daughter who she put up for adoption at just 20 when she was dirt poor. it is one of the most utterly heartbreaking songs i’ve heard. you can literally feel joni’s sadness over her decision and the fact that she had to give up something that she cared so deeply about. she sings about how her ex-lover who got her pregnant left her alone with her kid and nothing, however, she tells her kid that because of the fact that joni put her up for adoption, she will have so many great experiences. joni says that she is not regretful about her decision because it was the best one she could have made in the situation, but leaves her child with a final reminder that life will not be all great and there will be sorrow that she will go through. the next song, ‘carey’ is about joni’s bounce back from her relationship that had ended previously and describes her life while she was living at a hippie compound in greece. she describes her desire for freedom because of her lost love and her desire to travel the world and not be tethered to anything like love or responsibility. the next song, “blue”, is a song about depression and sadness directly. it talks about how depression captivates a person with some of the most poetic lyricism i have ever seen. she says that the only thing that is going on her life is substance abuse and having laughs and she believes that isnt the true way to happiness but that and her sadness is all she has right now so she is doing what she can to survive. the only thing that is true in her life right now is her blues and her sadness which is so heartbreakingly sad it is unbelievable. the next song, ‘california’, is about joni’s trip in europe that she took before she wrote this album. she describes her loneliness and longing for home but also her desire to escape it all and finds solace in the fact that she is a complete stranger in europe. this song is one of the more upbeat songs and just details joni’s life while she was in europe and how she was just being sporadic and not dealing with any responsibility. the next song, ‘this flight tonight’, details joni’s constant battle with freedom and love that is seen throughout the album. it tells the story of joni leaving a lover permanently on a flight and going across the country to escape the mess that was the relationship and is going to find her own freedom. however, on this flight she realizes she made a mistake and wants to turn the airplane around and realizes that she is valuing her relationship and made a mistake by ending it. the next song, ‘river’, details a relationship that ended. joni reminisces on the relationship and recognizes that her lover was good to her and did so much for her, but her blues never went away. she wanted out from it all and wishes there was a frozen river that she could skate on to get away from where she was, but she’s in california and not canada where she’s from so she can’t. she details how she wants to leave to escape the emotional pain that the relationship ending caused her. the next song, ‘a case of you’, is a song about inescapable love. the song details that her lover and her had broken up and that he was a difficult person. she longs to be away from him but realizes he is ingrained into her very being and she cannot escape him because she is apart of him. she knows that being with this person will cause her pain but she cannot stray away. she knows she will bleed if she continues but this person has already poisoned her bloodstream. the final song, ‘the last time i saw richard’, details the ups and downs of life that people go through. it shows how the character of richard goes from being a person cynical and fearful of love and gnawing on joni for being a person who believes in love. he describes her as naive and shallow and as someone who will go after any pretty face who calls her pretty. he becomes completely cynical to love and gives up with actually feeling real love and decides to feed into conformity and normalcy. ricahrd gave up after his relationship ended and he lost his dreams. joni reflects on this and is angry and believes that she would rather end up horribly alone than to succumb to cynicism and give up on the idea of youthful love. this album is so fucking good idk how i havent listened to it up to this point. her singing is fantastic, the instrumentation is stripped down but is so beatuiful despite that. all in all this album is amazing and i beg of everyone to listen to it.
